A message from Dr. Harris

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s so exciting to begin the “new year” in such an energetic school atmosphere! I think this is going to be the best year ever for each and every one of us. I hope you and your family had a great summer filled with rest, relaxation, and fun.

As you new principal, I should introduce myself. I worked in the Phoenix #1 District Student Services Department for four years as the Special Education Compliance Coordinator. This is my 32nd year in education where I have held the following positions: teacher (23 years), director/principal of three private schools, special education facilitator (Phoenix Union High School District), special education compliance coordinator (Phoenix District #1), Grand Canyon University Adjunct Professor, and principal at Shaw Elementary School. I also have a background in nursing (my first short-lived career). I always wanted to be a teacher, but my parents thought otherwise, so nursing was chosen as my occupation. I recently completed my dissertation for a PhD in Education. So, in a nutshell, I believe in learning as an ongoing part of my life. You’re never too old to learn something!

Now let’s talk about our school community! My motto is “We Can!” All we have to do is give our best each moment of the day, work as a team, and believe in our hearts that all children can learn given the time, opportunity, and motivation to do so. Our school mission and vision is being internalized by all which means we will meet our set goals. Please work closely with your children on a daily basis by reviewing homework, teacher communications, and school information in Thursday Folders. It’s very important that the office staff keep your personal information updated. So, please let us know when phone numbers, addresses, and emergency contacts change for you.

Dunbar’s school initiative is to increase parent involvement and volunteerism. It’s important for our students to know that their parents and the school are working together to ensure they are making the necessary gains to be successful academically, socially, and behaviorally in order to make a positive transition to high school and beyond. Please feel free to contact our Parent Engagement Liaison, Ursula Colter, to sign up to be an active participant in our school community.

I’m looking forward to meeting every parent. We will make a difference this school year! Please feel free to contact me at any time with your questions or concerns. Thank you for being an integral part of the Dunbar Family!

Go Dragons!

Sincerely,
Dr. Gail Harris
Principal, Dunbar School
