June 1st, 2012Phoenix Elementary School District Schools Host Summer Reading Program
Schools in Phoenix Elementary School District #1 are hosting a Summer Reading Program to encourage students to read over their summer break. There is a new twist to the program this summer as they ask students to log their reading minutes rather than the number of books they read. This promotes reading of books, magazines, Internet sites that provide appropriate information, instruction manuals for their latest tech toy or a variety of reading sources. Students can visit phxschools.org for their reading log and join the summer program at summerreadingaz.com.
The students will be rewarded for their summer reading through awards donated from Judy and Peter Ambelang who will host two assemblies for the top reading schools. The assemblies will include Mrs. B’s Storytime for students – mrsbstorytime.com. Individual students will be rewarded with coupons for free smoothies from McDonald’s Franchise Owner at 7th Avenue & Van Buren. Mr. Ken Clement and Peter Piper Pizza.
The District is pleased to participate in this summer program sponsored by our local libraries because we know the importance of reading daily throughout the summer break and engaging in learning activities. Research shows that students who read over the summer actually improve their reading ability while those who do not tend to lose literacy skills.
